I'm a 60's baby, but I’ve always felt like the 70’s was my era. The clothes, music, and movies hold a special place in my heart. I think maybe it’s because I secretly watched my older sisters live such vibrant lives through this decade.
Speaking of the 70’s, Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds me of lyrics to the song, “Lean on Me” with one exception. The “ME” I should really lean on is not myself or another person—but God.
I'll never forget Bill Withers’ voice and those famous chords: DUM..... Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum...
Proverbs 3:5-6 says this, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Truth is, we weren’t meant to live life alone—we all need somebody to lean on. Family and friends may be dependable, but they weren’t designed to bear the full weight of our causes—only God can do that.
The song, “Lean on Me” speaks of the importance of sharing one’s burdens with another who helps you to carry on and carry through in difficult times. God can definitely do that!
When I lean on, and lean into God, He always has the capacity to strengthen me to do the right thing and to say the right thing. When I listen and follow Him, He always leads me in the right direction.
Today, this 70's song makes me feel like God (not Bill) is singing it directly to me.
Lord, help me not to lean to my own understanding—Help me to Lean On You.
When you need somebody to lean on—Lean On Jesus.
Dum..... dum, dum, dum, dum...... Lean on Me!
