Legacy Gathering

Mind Right Monday….Legacy Gathering

Strangely, Mother’s Day is having a different meaning for me this year—I’m thinking legacy.

I'm not a graveyard person. But this past weekend, about 20 of my family members met at the Salem Baptist Church cemetery in Stampley, Mississippi. The church is more than 200 years old and stands as a National Landmark as the oldest established Baptist church in the state of Mississippi. The cemetery has graves that date back to the 1800’s—many of which are my maternal ancestors.

In addition to placing flowers at the eternal resting site of our ancesteors, we talked about our great-grandfather (Borg) who ran away as a slave, was protected by the Summa Indian tribe, and returned to Mississippi with his wife who he named India, because he could not pronounce her tribal name. My sisters and I are working to make this a special time for our children and grandchildren. I'm calling our time together, a Legacy Gathering.

Mother’s Day is becoming less about me and more about how my children and grandchildren will remember our family’s legacy of faith, family, and fun.

Mother’s Day is coming. Think Legacy!

It's Mind Right Monday....Legacy Gathering.
