Out with the old...

Time for Spiritual House Cleaning

September 23, 2020

I remember when we were growing up how after the winter was over and the cold was gone, my Mom had what we called, ‘Spring Cleaning’. We would all pitch in and give the house a general cleaning. We'd find things in closets that were just taking up space and needed to be thrown out. Drawers with clothes we no longer wanted or needed had to be discarded. Windows were opened, and everything was cleaned and given a fresh scent. She would even change curtains and rearrange the furniture. When the job was completed, we were tired, but it felt so good to be in a fresh environment.

As Christians, we really need to have a ‘spiritual cleaning’ on a daily basis. Just like physical weight can clutter our living areas, there are also weights that the Bible says “can easily beset us”.

One of those ‘weights’ I want to focus on is ‘unbelief’. Unbelief can be an unbearable weight on our hearts, and that can allow fear to choke our faith. Unbelief is associated with doubt. Unbelief is not limited to ‘not believing’, but having doubt as to what God can or will do in our lives according to our level of faith.

As we experience God in our daily walk with Him, it is essential that we study and learn to stand on what it says as well as what it means. Abraham was given promises by God. (Genesis 12:1-3); (Genesis 15:1-5) However, along the way, he developed some doubt in his relationship with God (Genesis 12:12-13)

But as we continue to see in this relationship, Abraham learns to trust God and depend on His Word. There were weights in Abraham’s life that needed to be abandoned in order to enhance his relationship with God. Just like with Abraham, God will allow some things in our lives, that may not seem positive to us, to strengthen us and mold us into a specimen for His service. Therefore, let us look to Jesus and trust the Holy Spirit to be our constant Guide as we engage in ‘Spiritual Cleaning’ everyday!

Challenge: Clean out "unbelief"

  • Let your study of God’s Word be daily
  • Absorb fully what The Word says and means
  • Be honest with yourself about what needs to be discarded in your life to enhance or heighten your walk with the Lord.
  • Remember, every day is “SPRING/SPIRITUAL CLEANING”!
