· Bible Basics

Peter was brave enough to ask Jesus how often should a person forgive someone who had wronged them. Peter’s response of seven times might have seemed generous for some. But Jesus’ response was a jaw-dropper.

Matthew 18:21-22 records this, “Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven."

If you’re multiplying, you’ve already missed the point.

Truth is, this lesson goes deeper than forgiveness. Forgiveness is a mindset that frees twice—it frees the perpetrator and the victim. Let's face it, people are always doing wrong stuff—ask Jesus. The right mindset helps you to think less about what people have done and will do to you, enabling you to forgive quicky and move on.

Forgiveness is about relationship where your concentration shouldn't be focused on what a person has done, but how you can live your best life. Extending grace, imparting mercy, and showing compassion directs you towards a positive energy space that allows you to become better, not bitter.

Forgiveness is about taking a hard look in the mirror. We all need forgiveness—everyone one of us, including you. Your practice of forgiving others should reflect how you’d want to be treated, when the tables turn.

Forgiveness is a lesson in demonstrating God-like character traits. Your opportunity to forgive someone should point you back to God. God’s forgiveness towards you is unconditional.

What does your forgiveness look like?

In my mind, the Bible is God’s Love Letters to mankind. Stop counting and develop the Forgiveness Mindset. Read the Letters.
