Help Me to Help Me

· Mental Health

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (MNIMA), it is estimated that more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. Mental illnesses include many different conditions that vary in degree of severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. It refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affect show we think, feel, and act. As with any other medical condition (like diabetes or high blood pressure), mental health requires the assistance of our doctors, counselors, and medication.

What can I do? Turn Awareness to Action:

Pray: Prayer is always in order. However, prayer is not enough. Sometimes medication and counseling are needed. We should share information with our doctor that will help us to address feelings of sadness or anxiety.

Be open to the concerns of your family and friends: Sometimes family members notice behaviors in us (like isolation and actions that we may not recognize as appropriate). You are not alone. Remember that we are in this together.

Supporting your family and friends:

  • Be open to understanding the impact of mental health conditions.
  • Consider a support group where you can learn tools to help you communicate with your loved ones more effective.
  • Be patient. Family members may not want to talk about or even accept a mental health conditions. But they do want and need our love, care, and support.
